Privacy

Nightjar is local-first. Commands, paths, environment variables, captured output, and run history stay on your Mac. Data leaves your Mac only for features you choose or services needed to deliver the product.

The short version: no account is required, Nightjar does not sell personal information, and it does not use your data for targeted advertising.

Data stored on your Mac

Nightjar stores jobs, commands, schedules, working directories, environment variables, run times, exit codes, standard output, standard error, settings, trial state, and any activated license key in a local SQLite database. Nightjar keeps the latest 500 runs for each job and automatically removes older runs. The remaining data stays on the Mac until you delete jobs or remove Nightjar’s application data.

Website analytics

The Nightjar website uses PostHog in cookieless mode to understand page visits, referrers, downloads, and interactions such as opening an FAQ. It respects Do Not Track, does not create person profiles, and does not record sessions. PostHog and the hosting provider may process ordinary request information such as browser, device, and network data when serving these requests.

Optional desktop diagnostics

After onboarding, you can choose whether to share anonymous diagnostics. If enabled, Nightjar sends a random per-install identifier, app version, platform and architecture, screen names, health counts, feature events, and error types to PostHog. It does not send commands, output, file paths, environment variables, email addresses, or your Mac’s name. You can disable diagnostics at any time in Settings.

Optional email watchdog

Email monitoring is off until you enable it and verify an email address. Enrollment sends your license key for validation, a random device identifier, and your email address. Monitoring sends job identifiers and names, schedule deadlines, grace and timeout values, run start/finish times, and run status. It does not send commands, output, paths, environment variables, or the name of your Mac.

The watchdog service stores token and license hashes rather than the raw credentials it uses for authentication. Verification and alert emails are delivered through Resend. Deadline records older than approximately 30 days are removed during service maintenance. Disabling the watchdog stops local sharing immediately and marks the server-side device and jobs inactive; it does not automatically erase the enrollment record. Payments and licenses

Purchases are handled by Dodo Payments as Merchant of Record. Dodo processes billing, payment, tax, receipt, and license-delivery information under its own privacy terms. Nightjar opens Dodo’s checkout in your browser and validates a license when you enable licensed cloud monitoring.

Waitlist and support

If you joined the earlier waitlist, your email address was stored with Resend so Nightjar could send the promised product update. If you contact support, Nightjar receives the information you include in your message. Do not send commands, logs, license keys, or other secrets unless they are necessary and you are comfortable sharing them. You may request removal from the waitlist or deletion of a support conversation by email.

Security and changes

Nightjar uses access tokens, hashed server credentials, input limits, and encrypted HTTPS connections. No system can guarantee absolute security. Material changes to this policy will be posted here with a new effective date.
